This was shot during my first visit to Pushkar Camel Fair in 2008

The Pushkar Fair is the annual five-day camel and livestock fair held in a town known as Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs, and apart from buying and selling of livestock it has become an important tourist attraction and its highlights have become competitions such as the "matka phod", "longest moustache", and "bridal competition" are the main draws for this fair which attracts thousands of tourists. In recent years the fair has also included an exhibition cricket match between the local Pushkar club and a team of random foreign tourists. Also there is a bridal competition for foreigners....

Happy Diwali !!!

Diwali, or Deepawali, is one of the biggest and grandest festivals of India. Celebrated across the globe by Indians as the "Festival of Lights," Diwali signifies victory of good over evil.

The celebration focuses on lights and lamps, particularly the traditional deep or deeya (earthen lamp), and fireworks.

As with other Indian festivals, Diwali signifies many different things to people across the country:

In north India, Diwali commemorates the homecoming of Lord Rama of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile in the forest and the defeat of the demon king Ravana. On this day, he returned to Ayodhya with his wife Sita and younger brother Lakshman to claim his kingdom. The people of Ayodhya welcomed him back by lighting up rows of lamps (deepa-wali) to help guide the way.

For Gujaratis, and Marwaris, Diwali marks the worship of Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth) and also the beginning of the new financial year. For Bengalis, it is the time to worship Goddess Kali or Durga.

Diwali also marks the end of the harvest season in most of India. Farmers are thankful for the year gone by, and pray for a good harvest for the year to come.

Everywhere, Diwali signifies the renewal of life and is an occasion for much celebration.

Hayat-Bakhsh Garden, Red Fort @ Delhi

Hayat-Bakhsh Garden And The Pavilions

The Red Fort and the city of Shahjahanabad was constructed by the Emperor Shah Jahan in 1639 A.D. The layout of the Red Fort was organised to retain and integrate this site with the Salimgarh Fort. The fortress palace is an important focal point of the medieval city of Shahjahanabad. The planning and aesthetics of the Red Fort represent the zenith of Mughal creativity which prevailed during the reign of Emperor Shahjahan. This Fort has had many developments added on after its construction by Emperor Shahjahan. The significant phases of development were under Aurangzeb and later Mughal rulers. Important physical changes were carried out in the overall settings of the site after the First War of Independence during British Rule in 1857. After Independence, the site experienced a few changes in terms of addition/alteration to the structures. During the British period the Fort was mainly used as a cantonment and even after Independence, a significant part of the Fort remained under the control of the Army until the year 2003.

Purana Qila: Delhi

Interior of Purana Qila

QALA-I-KUHNA-MASJID: The single-domed Qila-i-Kuna Mosque, built by Sher Shah in 1541 is an excellent example of a pre-Mughal design. The prayer hall inside has five elegant arched niches or mihrabs set in its western wall. Marble in shades of red, white and slate is used for the calligraphic inscriptions and marks a transition from Lodhi to Mughal architecture. A second storey provided space for female courtiers to pray, while the arched doorway on the left wall, framed by ornate jharokas, was reserved for members of the royal family.
