Himachali People playing Gajjus near Marhi @ Himachal Pradesh
More
Himachali People playing Gajjus near Marhi...
Gajju drums are seen mostly in the Kulu, Kinnaur, Lahaul and Sirmaur Districts of Himachal Pradesh. They are kept in monasteries and temples to be used in the times of any religious festival or Pujas. People belonging to certain tribes prefer Gajju over other rhythm instruments and they play it in various social functions. The tribal dances where the men and the women dance together wearing colorful attires are incomplete without the magical rhythms of Gajju.
The Gajjus are played in different fairs and carnivals. Auspicious occasions like weddings, births etc. are welcomed with the beating of the Gajjus. The Gajju players lead the religious processions and thus they are an inseparable part of the festivities.
Sculpture inside the Museum @ McLeodganj, Upper Dharmshala, HP
The Dalai Lama´s Temple is one of the most spiritually energizing place in Mcleodganj. It is filled with statues of important Buddhist figures, Tibetan prayer flags and ¨mani¨ stones. Having a tranquil atmosphere and messages of peace, love, and happiness makes this a relaxing oasis. The museum is open from sunrise to sunset everyday, and in the early hours of morning, you are welcome to observe the monks meditating and chanting.

Snow Covered Hills @ Rohtang Pass, Himachal Pradesh
Rohtang pass provides a natural divide between the sub-humid/humid Kullu Valley with a primarily Hindu culture (in the south), and the arid/semi-arid high-altitude Lahaul and Spiti valleys with a Buddhist culture (in the north). rotang pass lies on the watershed between the Chenab and Beas Basins. On the southern side of this pass, the Beas River emerges from underground and flows southward and on its northern side, the Chandra River, a source stream of the river Chenab, flows westward.

Waiting for Pushkar Camel Fair-2009
Rajasthan is at its colorful best during its fairs and festivals.
One of the most popular and colorful fairs of the Thar desert is the Pushkar fair, which begins on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi & goes on for five days till Kartik Purnima. The time of the fair coincides with the bright half of the moon during the months of October-November. The lake at Pushkar is one of the most sacred in India.
Special Attractions -
Camel FairThe picturesque lake of Pushkar is set in a valley just about 11 kilometres northwest of Ajmer, surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the fourth. Pushkar forms a fascinating location and a befitting backdrop for the annual religious and cattle fair. Turbaned heads of men, and colorful veils and skirts of the women, bring alive the arid desertscape. The village women dress in their best colourful clothes and finery for the five-day mela.
Like Varanasi, Pushkar is one of the sacred places for the Hindus, with 400 temples of which the most important is dedicated to Lord Brahma - the creator of the universe. Fifty-two ghats bind the lake. During the days of the mela, the otherwise tranquil lake is engulfed with religious fervor. Thousands of devotees collect to take a dip, sadhus descend from the Himalayas and people pray for salvation to the sound of verses from the Holy Scriptures, which fill the air.
In the afternoons, people crowd the stadium where camels, horses, and cows are paraded and raced. Camels are bought and sold during the Pushkar fair.
On the roadside, stalls of all kinds are set up to sell a cornucopia of items. Almost every household is engaged in setting them up as the locals try to capitalize on the massive influx of people. It is impossible to drive around because of the large crowds. Either you hire a camel or you walk. In this aspect, it is truly a rural bazaar.
An interesting part of the Pushkar Fair is the mass trading of camels. Of course, cattle and other livestock are also traded, but it's camels that hold center stage at Pushkar. Camel-traders and villagers from miles away converge to Pushkar with their humped beasts. Over 25,000 camels (on the conservative side) are traded; making this world's largest camel fair.
Since Pushkar is a religious place alcohol and non-vegetarian food is prohibited.
Pushkar Fair - Rituals and Traditions
Girls in Pushkar FairThese five days are a period of relaxation and merry-making for the villagers, despite being the busiest for them, as this is one of the largest cattle fairs in the country. Animals, mainly camels, are brought from miles around. Trading is brisk as several thousand heads of cattle exchange hands. All the camels are cleaned, washed, adorned, some are interestingly shorn to form patterns, and special stalls are set up selling finery and jewelry for the camels. Camels at the Pushkar fair are decorated with great care. They wear jewelry of silver and beads. There are silver bells and bangles around their ankles that jingle-jangle when they walk. An interesting ritual is the piercing of a camel's nose.
Races and competitions are organized. Camels lope across the sands sometimes throwing their riders on to the vast sands, amidst cheers and jeers from thousands of spectators. An interesting event is the camel beauty contest, where they are adorned and paraded. The camels preen before the crowds, enjoying every moment of the attention they get.
It is believed that for five days every year, all the gods visit Pushkar and bless the devout. This accounts for the unbelievable number of devotees who flock to the lake to wash away their sins.

A View of Bhuntar Airport from Bijli Mahadev @ Kullu
A single runway, set in a deep valley whose peaks are several thousand feet higher than the runway. One way in and fly out the opposite direction. This town of Bhuntar is an important junction and commercial center that is the gateway to Kullu Valley, a sacred valley with a deep mythological history, involving the Manu, (Hindu version of Noah) who is said to have landed not far from here after being warned by a fish of a great deluge. He is the founder of civilization and this valley is called the "valley of the gods", Hindu divine beings, who set up a democratic counsel in this region to govern society. Also, this valley is home to Manikaran, sacred town of Shiva's meditation spot, and his consort Parvati, namesake for a famous river that has hot springs along it. Also Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion, began his work in this valley. From Kullu one can proceed up the beautiful mountain valley lined with huge apple orchards, into Manali, home of the Manu, and from there up over Rohtang pass, 13,000 feet, connecting on to Kashmir and Tibet.

Bijli Mahadev @ Kullu, Himahcal Pradesh
Recently I visited Bijli Mahadev, which is a small trek from Kullu. Since there is a road now, so we had to trek 3 km only. Its really an amazing place to visit and this was the best place I visited during my recent Kullu-Manali trip of four days. I visited many places like Rohtang, Solang, Vishishth, Naggar, Kullu, Manali, Manimahesh etc, but the best part was trekking experience to Bijli Mahadev...

Its monsoon time in Delhi now...
A monsoon is a seasonal prevailing wind that lasts for several months, caused by the development of a thermal low over a land mass normally within the subtropics. The term was first used in English in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and neighboring countries to refer to the big seasonal winds blowing from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea in the southwest bringing heavy rainfall to the area.
