A single runway, set in a deep valley whose peaks are several thousand feet higher than the runway. One way in and fly out the opposite direction. This town of Bhuntar is an important junction and commercial center that is the gateway to Kullu Valley, a sacred valley with a deep mythological history, involving the Manu, (Hindu version of Noah) who is said to have landed not far from here after being warned by a fish of a great deluge. He is the founder of civilization and this valley is called the "valley of the gods", Hindu divine beings, who set up a democratic counsel in this region to govern society. Also, this valley is home to Manikaran, sacred town of Shiva's meditation spot, and his consort Parvati, namesake for a famous river that has hot springs along it. Also Guru Nanak, founder of the Sikh religion, began his work in this valley. From Kullu one can proceed up the beautiful mountain valley lined with huge apple orchards, into Manali, home of the Manu, and from there up over Rohtang pass, 13,000 feet, connecting on to Kashmir and Tibet.
